Rethinking thinking

07.04.2020

Every day, we meet people and process our interactions--making inferences and developing beliefs about the world around us. In this lesson, Trevor Maber introduces us to the idea of a 'ladder of inference' and a process for rethinking the way we interact.

Answer the following questions:

  1. One of the most important pieces of awareness from the Ladder of Inference is how easily we can take on an identical pattern of response and behavior to somewhat similar (but not identical) experiences over time. What is a behavior pattern that you want to change? How does the Ladder of Inference help you understand how to change this behavior pattern?

  2. Why do you suppose that the creator of this concept decided to use a ladder as his visual representation? What else could be used in place of a ladder?

  3. If you were a passenger in the car that was cut off in the parking lot, what might you say to the driver as they were honking their horn and rolling down their window to yell at the other driver? Why?
